W5 is a Canadian news magazine television series produced by CTV. The title refers to the five W’s of journalism: Who, What, Where, When and Why? W5 is recognized as the longest-running news magazine/documentary program in North America and the most-watched program of its type in Canada.
This morning I was wondering what a reporter would include if a documentary were to be made of my life. (Not very likely, I know … but just suppose.) It would definitely be worth asking yourself the same question (Again, just suppose.)
This is how I would like the W5 questions answered about me.
Who? — Who am I? Who are the important people in my life?
I am a Christ-follower, and Jesus is the most important person in my life. He has given me a spiritual family and a natural family to walk this life-journey with me.
What? — What is my life all about? What is its purpose?
My life is focused around Jesus – loving Him and being loved by Him, learning to know Him better, seeking to honor and obey Him.
Where? — Where is my life lived?
In the presence of Jesus, in His world, surrounded by His wondrous creation.
When? — When is my life taking place?
Exactly when the Lord ordained it – He knew me from the beginning, He knit me together in my mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13), He knows all the days ordained for me (Psalm 139:16), He knows the plans He has for me – to give me hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).
Why? — Why am I here?
To glorify God and enjoy Him forever (Westminster Confession – 1646).
Now of course, these are my ideal answers! And of course, I often have trouble living up to them. The Apostle Paul summed it up well: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” (Philippians 3:12). Even though I fall far short of where I want to be, my deepest desire is to live my days with Jesus as the focal point around which the W5’s of my life revolve.
At the end of the day, the story of my life – the story of anyone’s life – consists of the real answers to these probing questions. Nothing more, nothing less.
When my day is done, will my story be a good one? I like to think so.
Will yours? It’s something worth considering before it’s too late.
And there’s no time like the present for us to make the needed adjustments.
